Sheriff Tom Schmerber is the long-serving sheriff of Maverick County, Texas, bringing decades of experience in law enforcement and public service to his role.
Born and raised in Eagle Pass, Texas, Schmerber graduated from Eagle Pass High School in 1971. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Southwest Texas State University (now Texas State University) in 1974 and later obtained a Master’s in Education from Sul Ross State University in 1978. Schmerber began his professional career as a public school teacher in Eagle Pass, serving from 1974 to 1982. In 1982, he joined the United States Border Patrol, where he served for 26 years. His roles included Officer, Law Instructor at the U.S. Border Patrol Academy, Field Operations Supervisor, and Watch Commander for the Eagle Pass/Del Rio Sector.
In 2012, Schmerber was elected as the Sheriff of Maverick County and has been re-elected in subsequent elections. During his tenure, he has focused on enhancing public safety and addressing the challenges posed by the county’s proximity to the U.S.-Mexico border. Schmerber has emphasized collaboration with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies to manage issues related to immigration and border security.
Sheriff Schmerber is married to Blanca Medrano Schmerber, and they have a daughter, Blanca Nicole. He remains deeply connected to the Eagle Pass community, where he has spent the majority of his life.
